Santera Mairi

Santera Mairi is an event which people visit three temples in Hida Furukawa Town on the night of Jan 15th every year. This is the date of the anniversary for Saint Shinran who is the founder of Jodo Shinshu, a sect of Buddhism.
Large and small snow candles stand on the streets and light up the town covered with snow and creates a dreamy and romantic atmosphere.

In February, handmade ice and snow lanterns are set up besides buildings, on the streets ,and the bridge handrails to illuminate Kamioka Town. When looking at the dancing flames in this dreamy atmosphere, visitors may just forget the cold winter days.

Furukawa Matsuri is a festival for Ketawakamiya Shrine located in Hida Furukawa Town and held annually on April 19-20th. The festival begins on the evening of April 19th with the Okoshi Daiko, or Rousing Drums. Hundreds of men parade through the streets to "wake up" the town into an atmosphere of festivity.

Furukawa Matsuri is registered as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the government. The exciting Okoshi Daiko (Rousing Drums) and the gorgeous Yatai (Festival Floats) are the highlights of this festival. Locals say, 'this is the most important event of the year.'

Kitsune-bi Matsuri
This event held on the fourth Saturday of September every year, is based on a folk story, 'Kitsune no Yomeiri (Fox Bride)'. Locals and visitors wear fox-like make up and join in the parade. At the end of the parade, the marriage ceremony is held with stage performances.

Ikegahara Wetland is located in Nikoi Plateau (980m a.s.l). This is a great place to see beautiful scenery of wetland plants. One of the popular plants is Mizubasho or White Skunk Cabbage which blooms brilliant white flowers in early-mid May.

In this fun and popular activity, visitors will ride bicycles built on top of the rails through various different landscapes and tunnels. The railway was formerly used for mining purposes until 2006 in Kamioka Town and was refurbrished for the purposes of this activity. This video shows a scene where volunteers are changing the railway ties with new ones.
Sanchu Washi
Sanchu Washi
Washi is Japanese paper made from natural plants. This Sanchu Washi has 800 years of history and is still produced in Kawai Town using traditional handmade methods to create washi of extremely high quality. A unique and interesting part of making Sanchu-Washi includes laying kouzo (paper mulberry) on snow to bleach the paper using snow.
